18U COUNTY CUP – 1ST-3RD MARCH 2019

GIRLS – GROUP 3A – WIRRAL, MERSEYSIDE
Great weekend from the u18 girls at Wirral tennis centre. First day battle was won 5-4 over North Wales which set us up nicely for the weekend ahead. The next day a loss 6-3 to Buckinghamshire, although some close matches lost that could have gone the other way and given us a win. The last day another battle but a loss 5-4 against eventual winners Lancashire. Any team could have ended up in any position so it was a brilliantly fought weekend by the whole team and a very young and promising Wiltshire side.  By Becky Watts

BOYS – GROUP 5B – BARNSTAPLE
I was extremely proud of how the players behaved and competed during the event in Barnstaple. Having been relegated down to group 5 it was important we didn’t allow that to happened and we competed hard from the first point of the first day. Tommy Dearsley, Stanley Brown and Ethan Miller set the tone brilliantly with 3 hard fought wins which allowed the rest of the team to relax and take home comfortable 7-2 opening day victory against Oxfordshire. On day 2 we knew we we’re in for another tough match but once again we fought incredibly hard all day and ran out 5-4 winners against Cornwall.  Days 3 with our status in division 5 safe we had a chance for promotion against a very strong Devon side. Unfortunately are a tough weekend the team ran out of steam and we were unable to win the close matches we had on previous days.  All in all a great weekend, our goal at the start of the weekend was to stay in the same division and we managed that with ease.  A special note to Ethan Miller who won 6 out of 6 matches and Tommy Dearsley whom won 5 out of 6 matches.  By Neil Watts

14U COUNTY CUP – 4TH – 6TH MAY 2019

GIRLS – READING – GROUP H
Day 1- today was just the first round of doubles against a very strong Hertfordshire team. We arrived early, had a great warm up but the more experienced Herts doubles teams won comfortably.
Day2- finish off against Herts in the singles, much closer today with Georgia taking her opponent to a third set, Rebecca had a very close match too. We then had to play Oxfordshire. The girls started very well, Georgia winning comfortably and Louisa winning a close third setter. Jessica and Rebecca winning comfortably too. The girls were back. Oxfordshire beaten 6-0.
Day 3- for 3/4th play off against Berkshire. Got we off to a playing start but ended up going 1-1 after first round of singles, then Rebecca and Jessica won theirs too but both tough matches against very good opponents . 3-1 up we go, we lose the next doubles, 3-2 overall score then Jessica and Rebecca clinch the final match for a 3rd place this weekend. The girls played well and only lost to eventual winners Hertfordshire, bring on next year. By Becky Watts

BOYS – HASSOCKS – GROUP E
The Wiltshire boys claimed a respectable 4th place at the Under 14 County Cup qualifiers this years. The team of William Burridge, Seb Pasmore, Lewis Chattey, Woody Walker and Anthony Longjohn acquitted themselves honourably. Whilst other players around them were losing their heads in the partisan atmosphere I was proud of how our players kept control and fought hard for every point.

BOYS – BURNHAM-ON-SEA – GROUP E
We possibly arrived at Burnham with the youngest team (2 players still 9&Under) however we acquitted ourselves well in difficult conditions. Day 1 was glorious sunshine, day 2 tipping down with rain and heavy winds! All 4 boys battled hard in every match, and the most pleasing aspect was the “fighting spirit” they all showed throughout the weekend. Conditions were always going to be tricky to play “perfect tennis”, but all the lads adapted well showed true grit throughout. We were beaten well by Devon, however was unlucky against Avon with Alex Greenouff losing a close 16-14 match tie break singles (which could have swung either way). On the final day we played superb tennis to give us a 2-1 lead over Somerset (Hayden in particular playing excellent tennis), then a Greenouff and Mundy partnership finishing the match in a 3 set victory in the doubles with some excellent teamwork that has been practiced at the camps. Overall a good weekend with plenty of positives to take that I am sure the boys will learn from, but the hard work shown I am sure they will go on to do a lot better in future years.
